The Timgad festival, officially the Timgad International Cultural Festival, is a music festival held in July near the ruins of the Roman city of Timgad, in Batna province in northeastern Algeria. Over five evenings it brings together Algerian singers and artists from other countries. The 43rd edition took place from July 9 to 13, 2026, after a three-year absence.
Before making any travel plans, be aware that France Diplomatie (the French foreign ministry's travel advice) advises against all travel to Batna province unless strictly necessary.
Origins and meaning of the festival
The festival owes its prestige to its setting. Timgad was built from scratch in the year 100 by Emperor Trajan as a military colony. According to UNESCO, which added it to the World Heritage List in 1982, its grid plan is laid out around two main streets that cross at right angles, the cardo and the decumanus. You can still see an Arch of Trajan, baths, a forum and markets.
As its edition number shows, the festival has been around for decades. Even so, it was interrupted for three years before 2026.
The Timgad festival: what you will see
The 2026 edition was meant to be “special,” according to its director, Abdellah Bougandoura. He promised a blend of heritage and modernity, with new technologies used for the first time and the evenings streamed online.
On opening night, according to Radio Algérie, the audience saw a troupe from Batna, the ballet of the Office national de la culture et de l'information, and then raï singer Cheb Mami as the headliner. The program also included Houari Benchenet, Hamid Belbech, Nadia Guerfi and the group Tikoubaouine, along with artists from Tunisia, Syria, Mauritania and Chad.

The closing night, on the night of July 13 to 14, drew a large crowd and was attended by the minister of culture, according to APS.
Dates and venues
The festival takes place in July in Timgad, about 480 km southeast of Algiers and 110 km south of Constantine. Its dates change every year. After three years without an edition, there is no guarantee the festival will return in 2027: check that a new edition has been confirmed before you make plans.
The concerts are held in the evening. In 2026 they took place in a new open-air theater built next to the site, not in the ruins themselves.
Attending the Timgad festival
Safety first
Watch out
France Diplomatie advises against all travel to Batna province unless strictly necessary: residual terrorist groups remain in the mountain ranges, especially in the Aurès. A festival does not count as strictly necessary. If you decide to go anyway, register your trip with your government (French citizens use Ariane), do not travel outside towns at night and follow the authorities' instructions to the letter.
In practice, attending the festival means traveling in the evening and getting back late in an area under an advisory. We recommend waiting for France Diplomatie's advice to change before considering this trip. Also check your own government's travel advice. You will find the details on our Algeria page.
Visa
Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter Algeria: check your case on our Algeria entry requirements page. For a French passport it is required, and you apply at the consulate that covers your place of residence. Submit your application at least two weeks before you leave.
Getting there
In 2026, free shuttles ran from Batna and other major cities to the open-air theater, according to Radio Algérie. For long distances within Algeria, France Diplomatie recommends flying rather than driving.
Heat and clothing
July is hot on the high plains. Bring water and sun protection for the day, and a light long-sleeved layer for the evening.
Our advice
Before any trip to Algeria, sign up for your government's security alert service, such as Ariane for French citizens. Review the map of risk zones a few days before you leave.
The country's other celebrations are gathered in our calendar of festivals in Algeria.
