Independence Day in Djibouti falls every year on June 27. It celebrates the country's independence, proclaimed on June 27, 1977, and it is the national day. In Djibouti City in 2026, it unfolded in two parts: a large public concert on the eve, on Place Al Houriya, then a military parade on the morning of the 27th in Balbala, attended by the head of state. June 27, 2027 will mark 50 years of independence.
Origins and meaning of Independence Day in Djibouti
Before 1977, the territory was called French Somaliland (Côte française des Somalis). According to Lepetitjournal.com, it chose in a 1958 referendum to remain an overseas territory. In 1967, another referendum gave about 60% of the vote to staying within the French Republic; protests turned into riots and French troops intervened.
After some ten years of tension, and under pressure from the UN and the Organization of African Unity, France agreed to negotiate. A referendum was held on May 8, 1977. The Republic of Djibouti was proclaimed on June 27, 1977, led by Hassan Gouled. The site describes it as the last French colony to gain independence.
On the night of June 27, 1977, the colonial tricolor was replaced by the blue, green and white flag bearing a red star. According to the daily La Nation, it was raised for the first time on Place Al Houriya. The eve-of-holiday concert was held on that same square in 2026.

How the celebration unfolds
The eve: the concert on Place Al Houriya
In 2026, for the 49th anniversary, the Ministry of Youth and Culture organized a “mega public concert” on Place Al Houriya on the evening of June 26.
June 27: the military parade in Balbala
In 2026, the military parade was held on the morning of June 27 on the parade ground south of Camp Cheikh Osman, in Balbala. It took place under the high patronage of President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, in the presence of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the prime minister and the speaker of the National Assembly. Foot, motorized and armored units paraded past the stands.
According to La Nation, thousands of people from the capital and the inland regions arrived at the site from early morning. Several came with their families. Some parents even dressed their children in custom-made uniforms for the occasion.
Seeing our soldiers march brings back old memories for me.

France Diplomatie (the French foreign ministry's travel advice) places Djibouti City, like most of the country, under heightened vigilance. There has been no attack there since 2014, but stay alert in places frequented by foreigners, and respect checkpoints and instructions from the security forces. The areas strongly advised against include the surroundings of the border with Eritrea and the Loyada road toward Somaliland beyond the Refuge Décan. Check your own government's travel advice as well.
Watch out
It is forbidden to photograph military and official installations, and you need people's consent before photographing them. During the parade, ask on the spot before taking out your camera.
Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality. If you do, apply online on the official evisa.gouv.dj portal one to two weeks before departure.
