Divali, the Hindu festival of the victory of light over darkness, is a public holiday in Mauritius. In the evening, houses and yards light up with strings of lights and small clay lamps, and families exchange sweets such as gulab jamun and barfi. An evening walk through the villages lets you see the illuminations.
