The Imilchil Marriage Festival, or moussem des fiançailles (engagement festival), is a major celebration in the High Atlas where the Aït Haddidou tribes hold a collective wedding, run a souk and come together around Amazigh music. It takes place every year in late summer or early fall, in Imilchil and Bouzmou, in Midelt province. In 2026 it was held from October 1 to 3.
The moussem is paired with the Festival of Music of the Peaks (Festival des musiques des cimes), with evenings of folk troupes from several regions of Morocco.
Origins and meaning of the moussem
The legend of Isli and Tislit
It all starts with an impossible love story. According to the tradition reported by Hespress, a young man from the Aït Brahim and a young woman from the Aït Yazza wanted to marry, but their rival tribes opposed it. The two lovers are said to have wept so much that their tears formed two lakes, Isli and Tislit.
The moussem is presented as a renewed reconciliation between these tribes, long in conflict over pastures and irrigation water. Families take the opportunity to celebrate engagements, weddings and circumcisions.
As much a souk as a festival
The moussem is also a big market. A 2003 article in Bladi recalled that locals called it the “souk of the year.” The tribes traded livestock and grain there. Even today, the organizers present it as a place of trade between the region's tribes.
The girls and boys choose their spouses of their own free will before the festival; nobody forces them.
This point matters. In 2018, rumors considered insulting led some residents to boycott the event. The tribes saw them as an affront to the dignity of their daughters and of the region. Residents firmly reject the idea that brides are “sold” there.
The Imilchil Marriage Festival: what you will see
The highlight is the traditional collective wedding ceremony, with couples from different tribes. In 2025, according to the MAP news agency as republished by AllAfrica, the marriage certificates were signed in a tent near the mausoleum of Sidi Hmad Oulamghani, in Bouzmou.
| Highlight | What you see |
|---|---|
| Collective wedding | Signing of the certificates and celebration of the couples, near the Bouzmou mausoleum |
| Music of the Peaks evenings | Folk troupes, Amazigh music and dance |
| Fair | Crafts and local products from the region |
| Daytime | Sports competitions, children's activities, talks |
In 2026 the program also included a Quran recitation contest and a ceremony honoring the region's top students. The edition's theme was “Intangible Heritage, a Bridge Between Past and Future.”
The moussem is organized by the Akhiam association, together with the municipalities of Bouzmou and Imilchil and Midelt province.
Dates and venues
The dates change every year and are announced shortly beforehand. In 2025 the moussem was held from September 18 to 20. In 2026 it was held from October 1 to 3, according to Hespress. For 2027, wait for the official announcement, usually published at the end of summer.
The festivities are split between Imilchil and Bouzmou. The mausoleum where the ritual takes place is about twenty kilometers from the center of Imilchil, according to Bladi.
Our advice
Do not lock in your flights before the dates are announced. Keep a week of flexibility between mid-September and early October.
Attending the Imilchil Marriage Festival
Accommodation
This is the trickiest part. In 2025, according to MAP, accommodation in the region was fully booked during the moussem. Book as soon as the dates are announced, or go through an agency that organizes the trip.
Climate and clothing
The Aït Haddidou live at an altitude of about 2,300 meters. Evenings are cool even when the days are fine. Bring warm clothes and good shoes.
Respecting the families
The collective wedding is a real ceremony, not a show. Always ask before photographing the couples, women and children. Stay in the background while the certificates are being signed.
Watch out
The mountain roads to Imilchil are winding. Drive in daylight: France Diplomatie (the French foreign ministry's travel advice) advises against driving at night outside towns in Morocco.
Entry requirements and safety
Depending on your nationality, you will enter Morocco visa-free or need to apply for a visa: check your case on our Morocco entry requirements page.
