Festival Kreol is the great celebration of Creole culture in the Seychelles. Throughout October, Mahé, Praslin and La Digue move to the rhythm of concerts, parades, food fairs and traditional dances. The 41st edition of Festival Kreol Seychelles runs in October 2026, from the start of the month to the grand ball on the night of October 31.

Founded in 1985, it is the world's first festival devoted entirely to Creole heritage, according to Africanews.

Origins and meaning of Festival Kreol

Seychellois are Creole: their language, Kreol Seselwa, their food and their music blend African, European and Asian roots. The festival celebrates this shared identity. In 2025, for its 40th edition, it lasted about three weeks on Mahé, until November 2.

There is something unique in us, and it comes from our diverse origins. We come from Europe, from Africa and from Asia.

David André, principal secretary of the Seychelles National Institute for Culture, Heritage and the Arts, quoted by Africanews (October 2025)

The 2026 edition coincides with the 50th anniversary of Seychelles independence. Its motto, in Creole, looks both ways: “En lizye lo lepase, en lizye ver lavenir,” one eye on the past, one eye toward the future.

The festival is organized by the Seychelles National Institute for Culture, Heritage and the Arts (SNICHA), with activities in Victoria and in the districts.

What you will see at Festival Kreol

Traditional music is at the heart of the festival. Moutya and kamtole ring out during evenings around campfires, according to Go Travel magazine. Add to that dance, fashion, art exhibitions, crafts, storytelling and, above all, Creole cooking.

Here is a selection from the 2026 program, published by Inside Seychelles on September 29, 2026. Dates, times and venues may change.

Our advice

If you are only staying a few days, aim for the last week of October. The Freedom Square fair, the moutya evenings and the Bal Bobes follow one another from October 29 to 31.

Dates and places

The festival takes place every year in October. Its program spreads over the whole month, or nearly, and the high point comes in the last few days. In 2025, the festivities lasted until November 2. In 2026, the final event, the Bal Bobes, ends on the morning of November 1.

Most events take place in Victoria, the capital, and on the coast of Mahé, at Beau Vallon and Grand Anse. Praslin and La Digue also host evening events.

The full program comes out shortly before the opening: in 2026, the detailed calendar was published at the end of September. The 2027 program was not known as of mid-October 2026.

Attending Festival Kreol

Tickets

Most street events, such as the children's carnival, the moutya evenings and the Freedom Square fair, are held outdoors in public spaces. The big concerts and the Bal Bobes take place in halls or hotels: ask locally about admission.

Accommodation and getting around

Staying in Beau Vallon or near Victoria puts you within reach of the main events on Mahé. The island's roads are narrow and winding, with a risk of landslides, according to France Diplomatie (the French foreign ministry's travel advice): drive carefully, especially at night after a ball.

Entry requirements

Before boarding, apply online for a paid travel authorization on the official website seychelles.govtas.com. On arrival, airport police issue a free visitor's permit for up to three months. Apply one to two weeks before departure. See our Seychelles entry requirements page.

Watch out

Drownings happen every year in the Seychelles because of currents and reefs, and there have been several shark attacks on Praslin. Respect swimming bans, especially after a night of partying.
