The best time to visit Madagascar is April to November, during the dry season. Aim for May to October to travel by road and visit the Tsingy, June to September for the whales. From November to April, rain and cyclones often cut the roads.
The best time to visit Madagascar is April to November, during the dry season. For a first trip, aim for May to October: the roads are passable, the Tsingy de Bemaraha are open, and whales pass offshore from June to September. From November to April, rain and cyclones often cut the roads.
The details depend on the region: the east coast stays much wetter than the southwest, and the highlands are cool in July.
Two seasons: dry and wet
Madagascar has two main seasons. In Antananarivo, the capital, the dry season runs from April to mid-November, according to data compiled by WeatherSpark. The rainy season covers the rest of the year.
The contrast is sharp. January is the capital's wettest month, with about 424 mm of rain. August is the driest, with about 20 mm.
The wet season is also the hottest. In January, daytime highs reach about 27 °C in Antananarivo. In July, they drop to about 20 °C by day and 10 °C at night.
Cyclone season
According to L'Express de Madagascar, the cyclone season runs from November to April. The French foreign ministry (France Diplomatie) specifies that violent cyclones can form between January and April.
The 2025-2026 season was a reminder. Cyclone Fytia crossed the island from Soalala to Vatomandry, west to east. Then intense tropical cyclone Gezani struck on February 10, 2026. Madagascar's national disaster risk management office (BNGRC) counted at least 52 deaths, mostly in the Toamasina II district.
These figures do not concern a trip in August. They do show what a badly timed tour between January and April can cost.
Watch out
If you travel between November and April, follow the Météo Madagascar bulletins before every journey. Build spare days into your itinerary and take out insurance that covers cancellation.
What is the climate like by region?
Madagascar has several climates. The east coast is the wettest. The southwest stays dry almost all year. The highlands, in the center, are cool from June to August.
The table compares four benchmark towns. The data come from WeatherSpark for Antananarivo, Toamasina and Hell-Ville, and from Weather2Travel for Toliara.
| Region | Benchmark town | Wettest month | Driest month | Temperatures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highlands | Antananarivo | January (about 424 mm) | August (about 20 mm) | 20 °C by day and 10 °C at night in July |
| East coast | Toamasina | February (about 282 mm) | September (about 23 mm) | 30 °C by day in February, 24 °C in July |
| North, Nosy Be | Hell-Ville | February (about 231 mm) | August (almost no rain) | 29 °C by day in July |
| Southwest | Toliara | December and January (about 102 mm) | July and August (about 5 mm) | 32 °C by day in January, 27 °C in July |
The east coast and Sainte-Marie
The east coast gets the most regular rain. In Toamasina, even the driest month still sees about 23 mm. The wettest season there runs from mid-December to mid-April. It is also the coast most exposed to cyclones, as Gezani showed.
The southwest: Toliara, Ifaty, Morondava
The southwest is the driest region. In Toliara, about 5 mm of rain falls in July and again in August. Even in January, there are six rainy days on average, according to Weather2Travel. It is the easiest region to visit in the wet season, provided the roads to get there are open.
The north and Nosy Be
In Hell-Ville, on Nosy Be, the wet season runs roughly from November to April. August is almost rainless. It is hot all year: about 29 °C by day, even in July.
The highlands
Antananarivo sits at altitude, in the highlands. From June to August, the nights there are cool. Pack a fleece, even for a trip in the middle of the European summer.

This table brings together climate, parks, wildlife and known dates. It helps you pick the best time to visit Madagascar for what you want to see.

The Tsingy de Bemaraha: dry season only
The Tsingy de Bemaraha are forests of limestone needles in the west. Most visitors reach them from Morondava, then through the village of Bekopaka.
According to Le Routard, “the dry season, which runs from mid-April to mid-November, is the only time the park is accessible” (our translation). The rest of the year, the tracks become impassable. The guide considers May to early November the ideal period to see everything. It recommends at least two full days on site.
The park can also close earlier. In 2022, Madagascar National Parks closed it as early as November 16, because the Manambolo River was rising, Newsmada reported.
Our advice
For the Tsingy at the start or end of the season, book with an agency that can tell you whether the track is open. Keep a fallback option, such as the Avenue of the Baobabs near Morondava.
Whales, lemurs and chameleons
Humpback whales
Every year, humpback whales arrive in the waters off the northeast coast. The Nosy Be Regional Tourism Office places them from June to September. It names Sainte-Marie Island, Antongil Bay and Nosy Be as viewing areas. L'Express de Madagascar says they can be seen in Malagasy waters from June to October.
On Sainte-Marie, the Whale Festival celebrates the season. In 2026, it ran from July 11 to 19, according to L'Express de Madagascar. The dates change every year: check them before you book.
Lemurs and reptiles
According to the specialist magazine Madamagazine, September and October are the best months to watch lemurs. The young ride on their mothers' backs at that time.
Reptile lovers will choose differently. The same magazine says lizards, snakes and turtles are most active during the rainy season. Chameleons also show their brightest colors then.
Roads in the rainy season
This is often the deciding factor. France Diplomatie recommends flying or hiring a car with a driver for long distances. So the state of the roads decides everything.
The roads are sometimes impassable during the rainy season, from January to April.
The ministry also notes that “the state of the roads is very unpredictable” and that a 4x4 is essential outside towns. It advises against river treks from January to April. In the canyons of Isalo, sudden downpours can cause deadly flash floods.
Closures do not always come from the weather. In February 2026, the RN7, the road to the south, was closed for about a day and a half near Ambositra because of a damaged bridge, according to L'Express de Madagascar. Always allow some margin.
Health: what changes with the season
Malaria circulates year round throughout the country, especially on the coasts, according to France Diplomatie. So there is no risk-free season. Ask your doctor about preventive treatment, whatever your dates.
Plague is present in the highlands, generally above 800 m. France Diplomatie reports small outbreaks mostly between September and April. The WHO describes the same epidemic season, from September to April. If you travel in the highlands during that period, check before departure whether cases have been reported.
Dengue has been reported on the northeast coast (Antalaha, Sambava) and around Mahajanga (Majunga). Vaccines and the travel kit are covered on our health page.
Watch out
Any fever during your stay or in the three months after you return means seeing a doctor without delay, and mentioning your trip to Madagascar.
Safety and entry requirements
According to the French foreign ministry, the whole country is at heightened vigilance. It strongly advises against driving on national roads at night, whatever the season. Night falls early, around 5:30 p.m. Check your own government's travel advice too. Other guidance is gathered on our Madagascar page.
Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality. If you need one, you can get it at the airport or from an embassy. Your passport must be valid for six months after arrival. Check your case on our Madagascar entry requirements page, and apply one to two weeks before departure. To compare with other countries, see all our entry requirements.
The best time to visit Madagascar for your plans
It all depends on what you want to see:
- First tour (RN7, Tsingy, baobabs): May to October.
- Whales on Sainte-Marie: July to September, at the heart of the season given by Nosy Be.
- Baby lemurs: September and October.
- Reptiles and chameleons: the rainy season, if you accept difficult roads.
- Southwest beaches: almost all year, with less rain from April to November.
Our advice
If your only window is between January and March, choose the southwest and avoid long road journeys.
