Where to stay in Dakar: which neighborhood to choose?
For the ocean and a quieter pace, Ngor and the Almadies. For a short city stay or a business trip, the Plateau. For a gentler budget, Ouakam, the Mamelles or Yoff. Keep in mind that Blaise Diagne airport is about 45 km away, now linked to the center by the TER train.
Where to stay in Dakar? For the ocean and a quieter pace, choose Ngor or the Almadies, at the western tip of the peninsula. For a short stay, meetings or downtown life, pick the Plateau. For a gentler budget, look at Ouakam, the Mamelles or Yoff.
One thing changes everything: Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) is no longer in the city. It sits in Diass, about 45 km away. Since September 28, 2026, the TER train has linked it to Dakar station in about 55 minutes.
Where to stay in Dakar, depending on your trip
Dakar covers the Cap-Vert peninsula. The Plateau, the historic and administrative center, lies to the southeast. Ngor and the Almadies sit at the western tip. In between are residential neighborhoods such as Fann, Point E, Mermoz, Ouakam and the Mamelles.
Traffic is the real constraint. Lepetitjournal Dakar describes jams of “several tens of minutes” on the Plateau. So pick your neighborhood for what you plan to do each day, not just for the price.
The table sums it up. The last column gives rents per square meter recorded by Au Sénégal in April 2026. It is not the price of a night, but it is a good guide to how expensive a neighborhood is.
| Neighborhood | Best for | Atmosphere | Rent per m² (CFA francs, April 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ngor and Almadies | First visit, beach, surfing, nights out | Ocean, restaurants, hotels | 7,000 to 18,000 |
| Plateau | Short stays, business, trips to Gorée | Busy by day, quieter at night | 6,000 to 15,000 |
| Fann, Point E, Mermoz | Families, long stays | Residential and central | 3,000 to 13,000 |
| Ouakam and Mamelles | Mid-range budget, ocean views | Old village and new districts | 2,800 to 8,000 |
| Yoff | Small budget, beach, surfing | Coastal Lebou village | 3,000 to 6,000 |
| Médina | Immersion, very small budget | Historic working-class district | 2,000 to 4,500 |
Ngor and its island: the ocean on your doorstep
Ngor is a former Lebou fishing village at the northwestern tip of Dakar. According to Au Sénégal (June 2026), it has kept part of its identity, with its colorful pirogues and fishing. The Bay of Ngor is one of the country's well-known surf spots, with surf schools on site.
It is the right choice for a first visit if you love the sea. Rents there are lower than in the Almadies, according to Lepetitjournal Dakar.
Ngor Island lies just offshore. Le Routard gives a crossing of 3 to 10 minutes by pirogue from the beach, about 1,000 CFA francs round trip per person. Boats run roughly from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The island is closed to cars, and you can sleep there in a guest room or a hut.
Our advice
On Ngor Island, the last boat leaves around 7 p.m. If you sleep there, do your shopping and get cash before you cross.
The Almadies: comfort, restaurants and nightlife
Right next to Ngor, the Almadies have a more modern, cosmopolitan face. The Pointe des Almadies is the westernmost point of mainland Africa. The neighborhood is packed with hotels, restaurants, bars, supermarkets and embassies.
Along with Ngor, it is the most expensive part of the city. Lepetitjournal Dakar talks of “exorbitant rents.” In return, you get comfort, shops and the sea nearby. It is the easiest area for a first trip, especially with family.
The downside: the Plateau is far. From the Virage, between Ngor and Yoff, Lepetitjournal Dakar counts about 25 minutes to reach downtown without traffic. At rush hour, it takes much longer.
The Plateau: the heart of the city
The Plateau is Dakar's administrative and business center. You will find ministries, offices, markets and the TER station there. It is very lively by day and quieter at night, according to Au Sénégal.
This is the place to stay in Dakar for a short trip, a business visit or if you have no car: most errands can be done on foot. The port is close by. From there, the ferry reaches Gorée Island in about 20 minutes.
Dakar station is the TER terminus. Staying on the Plateau lets you reach the airport without a taxi, as long as your flight fits the train schedule.
The trade-off is traffic. Lepetitjournal Dakar calls it “very heavy, especially during the day.” The beaches are far, and the area winds down quickly in the evening.
Mermoz, Fann and Point E: central and residential
These neighborhoods lie between the Plateau and the Almadies. Fann and Point E are among the most upscale in the capital. The many embassies keep the streets calm and clean, according to Lepetitjournal Dakar. Point E is one of the oldest residential areas, with shops, restaurants and medical offices.
Mermoz is a little more affordable, with plenty of shops and schools. It is well placed between the Corniche and the VDN, the main road that crosses the city.
These neighborhoods suit families and long stays, with easy access to the rest of the city.
Ouakam and the Mamelles: the view without the Almadies price
Ouakam is a former Lebou village between the Mamelles and the Almadies. The Mamelles are two volcanic hills, home to the lighthouse and the African Renaissance Monument. Rents are gentler than in the Almadies, and some places have ocean views.
Lepetitjournal Dakar notes that many young people settle in the Mamelles “because prices are very affordable.” It is a good option for a stay of a month or more.
Watch out
In the Mamelles, some streets are unpaved and become hard to use during the rainy season, from July to October. Ask about access before booking for that period.
Yoff and the Médina: more local, less expensive
Yoff is a former Lebou village on the north coast, with a long sandy beach, surf spots and beach restaurants. Rents are low, according to Lepetitjournal Dakar. The neighborhood is far from downtown.
Lepetitjournal Dakar also flags a useful detail for the Virage and Yoff: the salty air damages electronics.
The Médina, near the Plateau, is a historic working-class district with family homes and old buildings. It is the cheapest neighborhood on Au Sénégal's list. It suits travelers who want immersion more than comfort.
it's 5 to 10 minutes from the airport, the little village of N'gor, between Yoff and Dakar
That advice predates 2017. It refers to the old Léopold Sédar Senghor airport, in Yoff. International flights have landed at Blaise Diagne, in Diass, since December 2017. Be wary of listings and old reviews that still praise Ngor or Yoff for being close to the airport.
Getting to Blaise Diagne airport from your neighborhood
Where to stay in Dakar when you land late or leave early? The airport weighs on the choice.
The TER train
The second phase of the TER opened on September 28, 2026, according to Dakaractu. The ride between Dakar station and AIBD takes about 55 minutes, with a train every 24 minutes between Diamniadio and the airport.
Since October 12, 2026, a one-way ticket costs 4,000 CFA francs in 2nd class from Dakar and 10,000 CFA francs in 1st class, according to Senego. Our sources do not yet give the time of the first and last trains: check it on terdakar.sn before a night flight.
Taxi and car
The airport is linked to Dakar by a toll highway. Au Sénégal gives about 40 minutes of driving without traffic and a total toll of 3,000 CFA francs for a car.
For taxis, the fare grid published by Au Sénégal (updated January 2023) listed 13,000 CFA francs by day and 18,000 CFA francs at night to Dakar, plus the toll. These amounts may have changed: agree on the price before you get in.
| From AIBD | Approximate time | Price |
|---|---|---|
| TER to Dakar station | About 55 min | 4,000 CFA francs (2nd class), 10,000 CFA francs (1st class) |
| Taxi on the highway | About 40 min without traffic | To negotiate, plus 3,000 CFA francs toll |
From Ngor or the Almadies, add the drive to the highway, which depends heavily on the time of day. For an early morning flight, book your taxi or transfer the day before.
Saly: a seaside alternative
Saly, on the Petite-Côte, is about 30 km from the airport, according to Au Sénégal. It is a beach resort with hotels and residences, handy if the beach is your main goal.
Watch out
The French foreign ministry urges caution on the coast from Somone and Saly down to Joal, and at Lac Rose. It states that assaults are not rare there, including burglaries of rental villas.
Safety: what France Diplomatie says
According to France Diplomatie's travel advice, updated September 29, 2026, Dakar is under heightened vigilance. Muggings and burglaries can happen by day or by night.
The ministry reports attacks on pedestrians along the Corniche road from nightfall. It advises against walking at night in poorly lit or empty streets, and against carrying jewelry or large sums of money. Keep a copy of your passport on you and the original in the safe.
Check your own government's travel advice too. Other guidance, emergency numbers and the areas to avoid in the country are gathered on our Senegal page.
Our advice
Choose a place with a guard or a reception desk open at night. In the evening, go home by taxi or ride-hailing app rather than on foot, even for a short distance.
Getting around and daily life
Taxis, ride-hailing and the BRT
The yellow and black taxis are negotiated before the ride. Ride-hailing apps work too: in September 2025, a Dakar court ruled that Yango, Yassir and Heetch could operate, rejecting a challenge from taxi drivers.
The BRT, an electric bus on a dedicated lane, links Petersen, near the Plateau, to Guédiawaye over 18.3 km. It serves Grand Dakar, Liberté and Grand Yoff, among others. A ride costs 400 or 500 CFA francs, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to Au Sénégal (September 2026).
Electricity, mosquitoes and seasons
In September 2026, Senego reported a generation shortfall of about 150 megawatts and power cuts mainly between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Ask whether your hotel has a generator. Outlets are type C and E, at 230 V.
Malaria is present all year in Senegal. A mosquito net or air conditioning matters when choosing a room. The rainy season, from July to October, brings storms that can flood roads, including in Dakar.
What budget should you plan?
According to Combien-coute.net, which compiles prices from booking sites, a night in a 3-star hotel in Dakar cost 99 € on average (about 65,000 CFA francs) at the end of September 2026. The range runs from 29 to 230 € depending on the property and the season. As with rents, expect to pay more in Ngor and the Almadies.
Watch out
The Youth Olympic Games take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026 in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. If you are traveling on those dates, book your accommodation as soon as possible.
The major religious holidays, such as Tabaski and Korité, also shift prices and transportation. France Diplomatie notes a rise in thefts before these holidays. Check our calendar of festivals in Senegal before setting your dates.
As for paperwork, whether you need a visa depends on your nationality, and your passport must be valid for more than six months. Check your case on our Senegal entry requirements page. If you need a visa, apply one to two weeks before departure.
Frequently asked questions
What is the safest neighborhood to stay in Dakar?
