Origins and meaning of June 26

Madagascar was a French colony. On October 14, 1958, the Malagasy Republic was proclaimed, with broad self-government within the French Community. Full independence followed on June 26, 1960. Philibert Tsiranana then became the first president of the Malagasy Republic, according to BlackPast.

More than sixty years later, Independence Day remains the celebration that matters most to many Malagasy people. A student interviewed in 2025 summed it up this way, in a report published by AllAfrica:

These are the celebrations that mean the most to Malagasy people.

Vanessa, a student in Antananarivo, quoted by AllAfrica (June 2025, our translation)

In the capital, people greet each other with “Tratry ny Asaramanitra!”, a wish for unity, reports L'Express de Madagascar. Families prepare big meals with relatives and friends.

How Madagascar Independence Day is celebrated

The days before

The festivities last about two weeks in Antananarivo. Stages are set up in the city's districts and neighborhoods, especially in Analakely. In 2024, a fairground with slides and bumper cars took over Avenue de l'Indépendance, according to L'Express de Madagascar.

The evening of June 25

This is the high point for most people. Children and families go out with paper lanterns, handmade or Chinese style, a tradition that lives on. Fireworks light up the city:

  • In 2024, crowds gathered around Lake Anosy from early afternoon, with a drone show for the first time.
  • In 2025, the main venue was Lake Iarivo, on the outskirts of the capital, with fireworks, light drones and water jets. Electric buses took people there from Tsarasaotra, and tens of thousands made the trip.

June 26

In the morning, the military parade is held at the Barea stadium in Mahamasina. In 2024, spectators were lining up from 6 a.m., despite the cold, to get a seat in the stands. A free show follows in the afternoon. In 2025, about 5,000 soldiers were expected.

Our advice

For the parade, arrive very early and bring a jacket: June mornings in Antananarivo are chilly. For the fireworks on the 25th, check that year's venue, since it changed between 2024 and 2025.

Dates and places

The date of Independence Day is fixed, and June 26 is a public holiday nationwide. Other large cities hold their own parades. In Antsiranana in 2026, a torchlight procession, fireworks on Place du 13-Mai and a civil and military parade lasting more than two hours marked the day, despite power cuts, according to L'Express de Madagascar.

Experiencing Independence Day in Madagascar

Entry requirements. Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality: check your case on our Madagascar entry requirements page. For stays of under 15 days, the visa is free according to France Diplomatie (the French foreign ministry's travel advice), but a border control fee of 10 euros is charged. Your passport must be valid for six months after arrival.

Weather. June falls in the dry season. In the Central Highlands, nights are cool: in July, Antananarivo sees about 20 °C (68 °F) by day and 10 °C (50 °F) at night. June also marks the arrival of the whales on the northeast coast.

Lodging and getting around. The local press reports dense crowds and traffic jams during the festivities every year. Book early, and use a driver or a trusted taxi to get back at night.

Watch out

According to France Diplomatie, all of Madagascar is under heightened vigilance. In Antananarivo, tourist spots such as Avenue de l'Indépendance and Analakely market are targeted by pickpockets, exactly where crowds gather on June 25. Do not walk around at night and stay away from demonstrations.

Carry little cash. Check your own government's travel advice as well.
